Chod in Context

Chod arose within a complex milieu, at a time was Tibet was experiencing a spiritual renaissance, and became one of the riches crucibles of sacred knowledge the world has ever seen. With this intricate web of influences and dynamic personalities, scholars have been “at sea” in terms of understanding how this unique practice arose, what its antecedents were, and what elements were synthesized or fused together to create this tradition, so radically different than anything seen before.

Instead of taking the academic path of trying to unravel the impossible fragments of historical records and jump to fantastic conclusions and fabricate psuedo-logical theories, we need only look to the rituals of Chod, the living testimony of the tradition. Here, we see clearly written, all the components that came together to create Chod. These are diagramatically outlined above, and in more verbal detail in our courses and books.

The Final Pathway of Chod

One caveat, however. We need to understand that, no matter how many cultural influences or environments existed at the time of Chod’s arisal, the actual origin is the same as EVERY single religious or spiritual tradition: Revelation. Effective and genuine spiritual paths are not invented in some boardroom, or by rooms full of scholars and pundits, or by common acclamation or celebrity. They arise as a direct transmission of Wisdom Mind, the unborn, undying cosmic intelligence and beingness that is both the origin and goal of religious thought. For those stuck in the dry husk of intellect, and who are not yet ripe enough to follow the mystic journey, mental theories may be enough. But for the true seeker, the origin of Chod arose, just as it arises each instant, and just as the mind of total freedom and wisdom can arise in this very moment.
